Dog trainer and behavioural coach

Looking beyond behaviour to understand the whole dog

I am Vanessa, the dog trainer and behavioural coach behind Pawsitive Steps. My own dogs taught me that every behaviour has a story as well as a biological reality.

My story

Kira changed how I see behaviour

Throughout my life I have guided several dogs with difficult backgrounds. Many came from shelters or had experienced trauma, so it seemed natural to explain challenging behaviour through history and upbringing.

Kira changed that perspective.

She came to me as a puppy, grew up safely and was well socialised. Yet she struggled to process stimuli, release stress and settle down.

Kira showed me how complex behaviour is. Experiences matter, but biology, character, sensory processing, environment and the relationship with the owner matter too.

My approach

No judgement and no perfect pictures

People often contact me only after they feel powerless, uncertain or overwhelmed. Perhaps you have tried several pieces of advice or feel watched when your dog pulls, barks or reacts fearfully.

That response is normal. We do not search for someone to blame. We look for the next step that is realistic for you and your dog.

What I stand for

  • Understand the complete dog and owner
  • Correct as little as possible
  • Never punish; teach and reward
  • Protect the bond between human and dog
  • Keep exercises realistic for daily life

You do not need to see the entire route yet

I do not need to follow you all the way to the top. When you can see the route and trust yourself to continue, my guidance has succeeded.
